At HIVE, we’re building sovereign compute for a national priority. Every facility is built sustainably, because the infrastructure that powers Canada’s AI future must work for the communities hosting it, not just the companies renting it.

By Craig Tavares, BUZZ HPC President & COO

I’ve spent more than 20 years building digital infrastructure in Canada — power generation, fibre networks, data centres, cloud platforms, GPU infrastructure and lots of clouds.

And after all of that, one thing seems pretty obvious:

  • AI is infrastructure.
  • AI doesn't run on PowerPoint.
  • It runs on power, fibre, data centres and GPUs.

I’m proud that BUZZ HPC is an original signatory.

The principles are straightforward: create lasting benefits for communities, protect ratepayers, use energy and water responsibly, be transparent about local impacts and make sure what we build creates strategic value for Canada.

I believe strongly in all five.

Canada cannot be an AI leader if we have to leave Canada to compute.

We helped pioneer modern AI. We have world-class researchers and some of the best engineering talent in the world and the ingredients to become an AI infrastructure superpower.

What we need now is the infrastructure to match our ambition.

No compute. No AI economy.

At BUZZ, we've spent the last few years building exactly that — sustainable, Canadian-controlled AI infrastructure at a scale that barely existed here when we started.

From electrons to tokens.

Because sovereignty isn't a policy statement.

Sovereignty is infrastructure you can point to.

  • Where does the compute run?
  • Where is the data?
  • Who controls the infrastructure?
  • Whose laws govern it?

Those questions increasingly determine who controls the economic value created by AI.

And while Canada absolutely needs to build faster, we also need to build better.

Speed and responsibility are not opposites.

We can build massive computing capacity while protecting ratepayers. We can design infrastructure that minimizes water consumption. We can create jobs, expand electrical and fibre infrastructure, support universities and researchers, and leave communities stronger than we found them.

Done properly, responsible AI infrastructure can become a Canadian competitive advantage.

The global AI infrastructure race is already underway.

And I believe Canadas biggest risk isn't building too much. Its building too slowly.

Thank you Evan Solomon, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and everyone involved in putting forward a framework that recognizes both sides of the equation:

Canada needs dramatically more compute.

And Canadians should benefit from building it.

At BUZZ HPC and HIVE Digital Technologies, we're going to keep doing our part.

Build it here.

Control it here.

Create the value here.
